2024 Avon Scholarship Awards Essay Contest

The Avon Theatre Film Center proudly announces our 15th Annual Scholarship Awards Essay Contest. The deadline to submit an essay is May 20, 2024.

Seniors in public and private high schools in Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY are invited to submit a 500 – 750 word essay on “FILM MATTERS”. Students are asked to write about a film released in 2023 or 2024. The genre can be a feature film, foreign or animated film, or a documentary you saw in a theater or online.

All entrants must be accepted into college and be enrolled full-time for the academic year 2024-2025. No gap year students are eligible.

Please answer the following questions when analyzing your film for your essay.

- How did the film impact you personally?
- Did the film change your mind about something?
- Did the film inspire you?
- Did the film make you feel seen or accepted?

The essays will each be read by at least two judges from a panel of professional journalists, published authors, filmmakers, and educators. The Avon Scholarship Essay Contest is sponsored by the Avon Film Education Initiative, which promotes film literacy by supporting teacher and student attendance at the Avon and by granting scholarships to high school seniors. Through its diverse offerings of independent, foreign, documentary, and classic films, the Avon is committed to instilling a life-long appreciation of the art and significance of film.

College scholarship prizes will be awarded at a ceremony at the Avon Theatre in early June 2024. Each winner will receive a check made out to the college they will attend in the Fall of 2024. All winners must submit their college student ID to be included on the check.
