The Avon Theatre has been a cherished fixture in downtown Stamford since 1939, welcoming millions of film fans since opening its doors. But right now, the Avon needs your help.
The pandemic has put us in a difficult place, threatening our existence as dozens of independent cinemas around the country have permanently closed. We cannot let that happen here. Here's why:
As a mission driven, non-profit independent cinema, the Avon has long offered films that are artistically significant, focus on meaningful social issues, have historic value, educate, and inspire local audiences.
The Avon provides free annual memberships to local educators, enabling them to bring the lessons of quality cinema into their classrooms. The Avon has welcomed hundreds of local students just this past year for free screenings of educationally significant films.
Avon screenings are often accompanied by live panel discussions with filmmakers, artists, or renowned subject experts. These programs are frequently done in collaboration with other local organizations.
Avon audiences contribute over $1.5 million annually to the Stamford economy as they combine trips to the theater with visits to downtown bars, restaurants, and retailers.
The Avon celebrates film as an art form and strives to support the careers of aspiring filmmakers. This year, the Avon provided $9,000 in scholarships to college bound high school seniors who submitted essays about films that changed their lives. The Avon received a record breaking 94 submissions.
The Avon has reopened with greatly reduced seating and a strict set of safety protocols. But this, combined with a closure of many months has taken a toll. Your support can make a real difference. Thank you for your consideration.
